In response to the Government’s decision to extend basic English language requirements to Skill Level 3 roles under the Accredited Employer Work Visa, ACT Leader David Seymour says:

"This is a strong step that reflects ACT policy.

"Earlier this month, ACT called for stronger English language requirements across all AEWV types. Today's announcement goes most of the way there. It will help ensure migrants can understand their rights, contribute effectively at work, and integrate into local communities.

"This is the second ACT immigration policy made reality in recent weeks. We also had the announcement of a test for people applying for citizenship. New Zealanders rightly expect that those who join our society understand our values, rights and responsibilities. Basic English is part of that bargain.

"The job is not finished. The Government should go further and apply basic English requirements to all skill levels. There is no good reason why highly paid managers should be exempt.

"A logical next step is to regularly review skill categories, as ACT has proposed. Categories should automatically expire each year unless there is up-to-date evidence of skill shortages. This would keep our immigration system tightly focused on the needs of New Zealanders.

"ACT will continue to push for an immigration system that works for New Zealand. We should welcome people who strengthen the Kiwi character and help build our infrastructure, but we should also enforce basic rules and standards."
