Fisheries backdown shows process working

ACT Conservation spokesperson Cameron Luxton is welcoming signalled changes to the Fisheries Amendment Bill, reversing catch size limit changes.

“Recreational fishers deserve real credit for their advocacy here. They raised real concerns with me about these changes. I took these concerns to my caucus colleagues who put them to our coalition partners. Now we see a shift in direction.

“Allowing undersized fish to be sold cut across the whole point of size limits. Those rules exist to protect the future of the fishery.

“Fishers spoke up, ACT listened and shared those concerns, and now we’re seeing a better outcome. That’s how the process should work and I’m proud of ACT's role.

“ACT will continue engaging through select committee, but there are still wider issues in the Bill that need to be worked through.”
