Bad Fisheries Bill on the rocks

ACT MP Cameron Luxton is welcoming the news that the controversial Fisheries Amendment Bill will not progress this term.

ACT MP Cameron Luxton is welcoming the news that the controversial Fisheries Amendment Bill will not progress this term.

“The Minister says ‘disharmony’ is the reason this bill has been pulled. Another way of putting it is that this is a victory for common sense and democracy,” says Mr Luxton.

“Fishers spoke up, made submissions, and made it clear this bill wasn't good enough. They deserve the credit for making politicians listen.

“From the start, there were serious concerns about allowing undersized fish to be landed and sold. Size limits exist for a reason. Fisheries management should be based on sound science and protecting the long-term sustainability of our fisheries.

“ACT has consistently argued that any changes to fisheries management must be properly consulted on, backed by evidence, and workable in practice. And importantly build trust, not break it down.

“I've been proud to stand alongside those concerned about the future of our fisheries, take their concerns back to ACT and the Government, and push for a better outcome.

“While this bill is gone, the issues it raised haven't disappeared. ACT will be taking a clear commitment to the next election. Fisheries management should be based on sound science, respect for property rights, and the long-term sustainability of the resource.

“Fishers deserve confidence that decisions affecting their livelihoods and way of life will be made on evidence, not politics.

“Fishing is part of New Zealand's way of life. Today shows that when people get involved and make their voices heard, they can make a real difference.”
