“ACT welcomes the release of the Government’s Cyber Security Strategy for 2026–2030," says ACT Leader David Seymour, while saying the government could take additional steps to protect New Zealanders' data.
“The Strategy recognises that digital threats are growing and that New Zealand must strengthen its defences.
“Patients expect their medical histories to be kept confidential. Licensed firearms owners expect their information to be secure. Every New Zealander who provides data to a government agency, or to a company contracted by one, is entitled to the same standard of care.
“When that data is breached, it is a violation of trust. The duty to protect it must follow the data, whether it sits with a department or a contractor.
“The new strategy sets out how Government agencies will work together to lift cybersecurity standards, improve coordination with the private sector, strengthen protections for critical infrastructure, and respond more effectively when attacks occur. It is about preventing breaches where possible, and limiting the damage when they happen.
“ACT is open to going further. We could improve incentives for entities holding New Zealanders' data. We could increase penalties for hackers and scammers. We should also question whether it is even reasonable to demand New Zealanders provide sensitive information or digital identification for everyday activities, such as what has been proposed for social media users."
