ACT’s Immigration spokesperson Dr Parmjeet Parmar has welcomed the announcement of the Immigration (Enhanced Risk Management) Amendment Bill, saying it restores integrity to the immigration system.

“Most migrants do the right thing, but when people lie, cheat, or commit serious crimes, New Zealand must be able to act swiftly and decisively. That’s what this law delivers,” says Dr Parmar.

The bill strengthens deportation rules for serious offenders, makes false or misleading information on visa applications grounds for deportation, and confirms that historic crimes committed before arrival in New Zealand can lead to deportation. Deportation notices will also be able to be served electronically, and immigration officers will have stronger ID-checking powers when breaches are suspected.

“Migrant exploitation is also being met with tougher penalties, with maximum jail terms increasing from seven to ten years. Exploiting vulnerable people will not be tolerated," says Dr Parmar.

“ACT backs the many migrants who come to New Zealand to make an honest contribution to our economy and society. The flipside is that we must come down hard on those who take advantage of New Zealanders or each other. Immigration must be fair and trusted, and above all, it should work for New Zealanders.

"We could improve the immigration system further. ACT has long argued that people seeking citizenship or permanent residency should sign up to basic values, such as respect for free speech and equal rights for all New Zealanders, regardless of sex or race."
