ACT Health spokesperson Todd Stephenson and Health Committee member Cameron Luxton support AGenDA’s call for the Government to consult on protections against genetic discrimination in life and health insurance.
“Genetic testing is becoming a normal part of healthcare. It can help diagnose diseases, inform cancer treatment, identify inherited conditions, and give people the opportunity to act early to protect their health," says Mr Stephenson.
“New Zealanders shouldn’t have to worry that taking a genetic test on the advice of their doctor could make it harder or more expensive to get insurance.
“The law already allows the Government to regulate how insurers use genetic testing information. Starting consultation would allow New Zealanders, health professionals and insurers to have their say on what those rules should look like.
“We heard a strong case from AGenDA at the Health Committee today. Getting consultation underway is a sensible next step.”
