86 per cent of GP owners back ACT's plan to boost funding

“ACT welcomes the overwhelming support from general practice owners for ACT's Health Policy to boost primary care,” says ACT Leader David Seymour.

“ACT welcomes the overwhelming support from general practice owners for ACT's Health Policy to boost primary care,” says ACT Leader David Seymour.

“A new survey of 132 general practice owners shows 86 per cent support ACT's proposed funding boost. These are the people on the front line of primary healthcare, who understand what's needed to get more patients seen.

“The easiest doctor to recruit is the one you don't lose. With 35 per cent of GPs intending to retire within five years and 18 per cent considering moving overseas, we’re making staying in New Zealand and continuing to serve locally more attractive.

“ACT will invest an additional $400 million in general practice over four years, on top of normal funding increases. That will help practices offer competitive pay, retain experienced staff, and provide more appointments.

“ACT doesn’t say this often, but in some cases money talks. Increasing funding means we’ll keep more of our existing doctors, while attracting more qualified doctors from overseas.

“One of the many differences between us and Labour is that our promises are fully funded though, and we invest where it matters. Their policy for three free appointments is panned in the same survey, with only 14 per cent support.

“We’ll also unlock the potential of our existing healthcare workforce through our Pharmacy First policy. Pharmacists will be able to treat more minor ailments, help patients manage stable long-term conditions under GP oversight, and take pressure off general practices.

“Not every health problem needs a GP appointment. Giving pharmacists permission to do more will free up doctors to focus on patients who need their expertise most. If Kiwis can get their problems more easily seen to by Pharmacists and GPs then the pressure on Emergency Departments will ease.

“Party Vote ACT to unlock the potential of primary healthcare.”
