Following the Christchurch mosque shootings on March 15, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is offering free replacement number plates to vehicle owners who are uncomfortable with a 'GUN' registration.

The standard issue GUN number plate series was issued in 2013. The NZTA does not plan to withdraw these prefix plates from circulation.

NZTA spokesperson, Andy Knackstedt, said: "We understand that given recent events some vehicle owners may no longer wish to have these plates affixed to their vehicles, and if owners contact us we can exchange plates with this number series for a different standard issue plate at no charge."

Knackstedt confirmed one vehicle owner has contacted the NZTA in regards to their GUN series registration plate so far. A replacement plate has been issued.

"The waived free (for a replacement standard issue plate) is $19.41," said Knackstedt.

A Wellington man raised the topic with NZTA this week after becoming upset by another vehicle's GUN registration plate.

Knackstedt urges vehicle owners who are uncomfortable with their GUN registration to contact NZTA at info@nzta.govt.nz, or by ringing 0800 108 809.
