Each year the Epsom Electorate comes together for a Pink Ribbon Breakfast to support the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. We raise money for the Foundation and seek to have an informative guest speaker. In the past we have had breast surgeons Erica Whineray-Kelly and John Harman, patient advocate Troy Elliot, cancer biologist Dr Emma Nolan, and ACT Deputy Leader MP Brooke van Velden. This year we are delighted to welcome our speaker Libby Burgess MNZM, Chair of the Breast Cancer Aotearoa Coalition. The BCAC is the umbrella organisation representing more than 30 breast cancer-related groups, including the Breast Cancer Foundation, and is run by breast cancer survivors. Following her own breast cancer diagnosis at age 41, Libby became a passionate advocate for better detection, diagnosis, treatments and supportive care, and has challenged successive governments to improve breast cancer treatments and survival rates. Libby has actively campaigned on related issues including better access to screening, medicines, surgery, radiotherapy and clinical trials. In 2011 she was awarded the MNZM for services to women's health.
