About
Brooke van Velden is an economist, campaigner, and proud Aucklandlander with a heart for community. Raised in a family of small business owners and hard grafters, she knows the meaning of rolling up your sleeves and getting things done.
At St Cuthbert’s College, Brooke found her voice in public speaking, sang with the Saints Alive Choir, played in the school orchestra, and hit the netball court with her teammates. Those experiences sparked a lifelong drive to be involved and make a difference.
Brooke went on to study Economics and International Trade at the University of Auckland, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Commerce. She worked in a factory, advised in corporate affairs, and then stepped into Parliament behind the scenes, helping to pass the End of Life Choice Act — a cause close to her heart because it champions choice and compassion.
At the age of 27, Brooke was selected as ACT's Deputy Leader and placed second on the party list. She was elected to Parliament in 2020, and in 2023 won the Tāmaki electorate, defeating a long-standing MP. She now serves as Minister of Internal Affairs and Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety in the coalition Government. When she’s not working to make life better for Kiwis, you’ll probably find Brooke in her electorate walking the beachfront or hitting up one of its many delicious cafes.

“The walls of this debating chamber commemorate the sacrifices made by men and women in war for the freedom and lives of others... it is also a reminder that while we need Government to preserve our freedoms, concentrated power can threaten our freedoms.”
