Residents win real consultation on Auckland housing plan
Epsom MP David Seymour is welcoming the announcement that Aucklanders will now be genuinely consulted on Auckland Council’s new zoning plan.
Epsom MP David Seymour is welcoming the announcement that Aucklanders will now be genuinely consulted on Auckland Council’s new zoning plan.
“Over the past few weeks, residents in my electorate have mobilised by turning up to public meetings in Remuera, Epsom, and Parnell, and writing to councillors, local boards, and newspapers. Today’s good news shows how principled, proactive engagement has made a real impact,” says Mr Seymour.
Pending Auckland Council’s decision to notify the new plan, RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop has confirmed:
• From 3 November to 19 December, anyone can make a submission.
• In the new year, an Independent Hearings Panel will hear directly from submitters.
• The overall process will take 18 months, ensuring issues are properly considered.
“Instead of sweeping zoning changes being rammed through behind closed doors, residents will now have the right to speak, submit, and be heard,” says Mr Seymour.
“We also get real accountability. The extended timeline means the issue will be front and centre in both the 2025 local elections and the 2026 general election. Candidates for Council and Parliament alike will have to front up and explain where they stand.
“This news shows the Government is listening, and we can make a difference. When Labour and National teamed up to impose Medium Density Residential Standards across the entire city, we pushed back, and ACT restored a locally led process. Now, with a new plan from Council officials that would put real pressure on strained infrastructure, we've secured time for proper feedback on the impacts.
“There’s still a long road ahead, so Brooke van Velden and I will be encouraging residents in our electorates to make submissions highlighting issues in the plan for their neighbourhoods.”
