New Zealand should be ready to help Iranian footballers in danger

ACT MP Laura McClure says “Australia’s decision to grant humanitarian visas to five members of the Iranian women’s football team is welcome news for anyone who believes people should not be punished for peaceful dissent, and New Zealand should be ready to help any others who remain at risk.

“These young women have shown remarkable courage. They refused to sing the anthem of an oppressive regime and as a result they now face real danger. Australia has stepped up to protect five of them, and ACT applauds that decision.

“Australia’s Home Affairs Minister has confirmed the five players have been granted humanitarian visas and are now safe. The Australian Government has also offered support for any other teammates who wish to seek protection.

“ACT believes New Zealand should be ready to help any others who need safety. If there are remaining players who are afraid to return to Iran, New Zealand should work constructively with Australia and the UNHCR to make sure no one is sent back to danger.

“New Zealand’s refugee and protection system already has clear safeguards.

“Our laws are very clear. New Zealand does not send people back to places where they are at risk. If any of these women face real danger in Iran, we should be ready to offer humanitarian assistance through proper channels. The focus should be on the women’s safety, not political theatre.

“These athletes are not seeking headlines. They are seeking protection from a regime that punishes women for peaceful dissent. At a moment like this, calm and principled leadership matters. ACT supports a rules-based process that protects people in genuine need.

“The courage of the players should be recognised. These women stood up for their dignity in front of the world. Today they are safer, and that is something everyone who values freedom should celebrate.”
