Guaranteed Value

ACT believes High Performance Government comes from making government more transparent and accountable.

Government should tell us what our tax dollars are for. A clear intent of what will be done with our money. What we will get in return for our taxes. In fine detail.

ACT wants it spelled out as simply as that.

Government and its departments should be held accountable for keeping their word.

We expect tradesmen to keep their word, so why not Government departments?

Health insurance companies will tell you what you’re entitled to, as will security companies. So too should public hospitals and the police.

Government takes taxes to pay for health care. ACT wants them to tell us precisely what we will get in return.

ACT wants everyone to know if they are covered for a hip replacement, or if their deaf child will get the appropriate education to suit their needs.

ACT wants a performance pledge from the police. We are entitled to know what level of response we can expect when a crime is committed. We are entitled to know where the police put their priorities.

A pledge that recognises parole as a failed experiment to be replaced by “truth in sentencing”. Criminals to serve all the time that judges give them. And, to ensure every sentence counts, an end to criminals serving multiple sentences simultaneously.

A pledge that while behind bars, inmates will be required to study, sit and pass exams, with a focus on skills-based education.  A minimum standard for release, where everyone is able to read and write and has paid their full debt to society. And an end to drugs in jail.

Every Government department should give a Service Guarantee so we know precisely what to expect for our tax dollar.

ACT wants a pledge of professionally-run public health, education and welfare services.

And, because it’s our money, our taxes, we are entitled that someone be held accountable if that pledge is not met.
